People with cataracts can also benefit from laser surgery for the eyes. Through a specific procedure called phacoemulsification, the cataract is broken into smaller pieces. Afterwards, the pieces are suctioned off via a small cut. Minor problems can be in the form of hazy film or blurred vision which can easily be corrected. After the cataract is removed, it does not return.

Since its debut in the 1980s, there have been conflicting stories about what LASIK entails and whether or not it's truly successful. If you have nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism they you are probably a canidate for this new technology. In some cases it will eliminate glasses and contacts and for other it could possible mean only having to use glasses occasionally.( DR WILLIAM A. BOOTHE)

Until recently, contact lenses and dry eyes seemed to come hand in hand. Modern technology, however, has developed several ways for contact lens wearers to deal with dry eyes. When eyes become dry, they can be irritable, bloodshot and in severe cases, vision can become impaired.

Laser surgery for eyes is also recommended for glaucoma patients. Glaucoma results from poor drainage of aqueous fluids in the eye. Dr. Boothe, the result is a build- up of pressure that can press against the optic nerves. This can lead to serious complications especially if the optic nerves are damaged beyond repair. Laser beams can be directed into the area where this fluid accumulates to widen the angle through which it flows.

Dry eyes occur for a number of reasons, although there is thought to be a particular link between extended contact lenses and dry eyes. Dry eyes are also prevalent with older contact lens wearers as tear ducts become less effective with age. Problems with contact lenses and dry eyes become exacerbated when wearers spend a considerable length of time in front of a computer screen or in an air-conditioned environment.( DR. WILLIAM A. Dr. Boothe, having problems with vision and having to wear eyeglasses or contact lenses can be burdensome. Some have problems with constantly losing or breaking glasses and tearing contact lenses. Some find it difficult to look for glasses that perfectly fit the shape of their faces and some feel that it makes them look older.

As we age, the lens of the eyes becomes rigid, loses its flexibility, and thus its ability to focus as well. The exact cause of presbyopia is still under research and debate. One theory is that the fibers in the lens become stiffened and are unable to change shape as well. Another theory is that the lens grows too big and is not able to change shape as well. Other factors such as trauma, occupation, and lifestyle may be factors as well.

A common problem is drooping eyelids. An option for this is blepharoplasty or eyelift. This is one of the most common cosmetic procedures done on the face. The surgeon folds the flap back out of the way, then removes some corneal tissue underneath using an excimer laser. Dr. Boothe the excimer laser uses a cool ultraviolet light beam to precisely remove ("ablate") very tiny bits of tissue from the cornea to reshape it. When the cornea is reshaped in the right way, it works better to focus light into the eye and onto the retina, providing clearer vision than before. The flap is then laid back in place, covering the area where the corneal tissue was removed. Dr. Boothe, both nearsighted and farsighted people can benefit from the LASIK procedure. With nearsighted people, the goal is to flatten the too-steep cornea; with farsighted people, a steeper cornea is desired. While this is not widely recognized by consumers, excimer lasers also can correct astigmatism by smoothing an irregular cornea into a more normal shape.

Have you considered laser vision correction, but are scared it won't work out and you will be back to where you started from only with less money? If you are considering laser vision correction surgery then do not be afraid or concerned that it does not work. There a millions of cases of laser vision correction surgery that has met or exceeded the patients' expectations. There are a few situations where the surgery fails, however this is in the minority and can frequently be fixed in a follow up surgery.

There are many reasons why laser vision correction is a great option for individuals who need and want good vision without glasses or contact lenses. However, sometimes the correction does not go far enough and the patient is left still wearing glasses or lenses.

Laser correction works because the cornea is reshaped so the eye can process light correctly and reduce fuzziness while improving clarity. The cornea is reshaped by a laser and because of this sometimes the surgery can remove too much slope or not enough. When this happens the patient is in need of a follow up surgery or is relegated to wearing lenses or glasses. However, this does not happen frequently and patients generally get near to perfect or perfect vision with this procedure. As a result, this surgery really does work and allows patients clear and improved vision in most cases.

If you are still concerned about laser vision correction and want to know if it is right for you, visit an ophthalmologist for a consultation. This should help allay your fears and help you realize that laser vision correction is a wonderful option and more often than not is hugely successful. If you are still skeptical, talk to some people who have previously undergone the procedure. This first hand recount will help you know if laser vision correction is for you.
